Transcribing The Interview
Dominick Flores and Trevor Prais
Us: Hello
Mike: Hello
Us: Can you state your name please
Mike: Mike Omerias
Us: Mike how did you come to your profession, that is teaching?
Mike: I got into teaching immediately after college so it’s the only way I’ve ever learned my livelihood so in college I was interested in becoming a physicist my degree was in physics but spending all of this time in the lab like hours and hours like just dealing with all of the things that go along with being a physicist it started to not appeal to me sp I was a camp counselor for one summer during college and after that I knew I wanted to get into education so I stuck around after I got my physics degree and got a masters in education and did my student teaching and got into teaching physics up in the bay area.
Us: Are there some things in life that you feel like you missed out on by not being a physicist or some opportunities that you possibly missed that you wished you go back and do?
Mike: I mean there's definitely things where now that I am older and more mature and have learned more things it’s like wow if I could go back I would make even like better use of the resources that were available to me in college right like if I could go back in time and do it again yeah maybe I can totally crush it as a theoretical physicist but for that but where I was in my personal development I just wasn’t ready for it so it wasn’t a good fit and so I think that at that point in time I think I made the right decision between the two things but yeah if I could go back I could definitely you know I would be a lot better at physics a second time right.
Us: Yeah ummm are there some fears in life that you just think of and you wish to overcome or somethings in life that are in your way that you know you can overcome but you are just too afraid to?
Mike: I mean you know there’s some stuff that I sometimes all you know feel a little gung ho about a certain aspect of you know project base learning or what high tech high is about and I think that there sometimes where you know I could be more proactive about telling other people about how I think about things should be and about you know my input on structures and in education soo thats kind of a thats my growth area right cause I’ve you know getting into a little more experience here at high tech it’s like my ninth year of teaching overall this is only my third year here at high tech so as I am feeling more confident I think I can make kind a you know make bigger statements about how I like this to be and kind of have more of a voice in what I want for our organization to be like so yeah that’s what I am trying to get into.
Us: And then last question what are some hopes for your future and what do you wish to happen in your future?
Mike: Well I I hope that I can setup our highschool for maximum success because my son is eventually gonna go here you know he started up in the kindergarten and I am not planning to like you know move him out somewhere else in the world so I am hoping that a you know some years from now he is gonna end up at this school and if can put things in place and like help build a culture and setup these facilities to be nice it’ll pay dividends for my family for my son and then eventually for my daughter.
Us: Alright thank you so much for the interview and have a great rest of your day.
Mike: Awesome
